When we first got chickens, I quickly learned that keeping a backyard flock involves a little more than collecting eggs and watching your hens wander around the yard.

There's bedding to change, nesting boxes to maintain, a coop to clean, and the occasional chicken who seems determined to make your life more interesting. And once you've been keeping chickens for a while, you start figuring out which supplies make the everyday routine easier and which ones aren't worth buying again.

Over the last year and a half, I've tried products from several different chicken supply companies. I've paid attention to what works for our flock, what makes coop maintenance easier, and what I actually want to keep stocked.

That's how I landed on Premium Poultry as my go-to for many of our chicken-keeping essentials.

Here's what I like about the brand and the supplies worth knowing about if you're raising backyard chickens, too.

Why I Chose Premium Poultry

I don't want to buy something just because it looks good in a sponsored post. If I'm going to recommend a product to you, I want it to make sense for real life.

What I appreciate about Premium Poultry is that it brings a variety of chicken-care essentials together in one place. Instead of bouncing between several websites to find bedding, nesting supplies, treats, and coop-care products, I can shop one store for many of the things I need.

The company is American-owned and family-run, and it works with U.S. growers to source its hemp products. I also like having options for larger bags and multipacks, so I don't have to constantly reorder smaller quantities of what we use regularly.

Because we keep a flock of our own, I think about supplies in terms of how they'll work in our actual coop—not just how they look on a shelf.

Here are a few products worth checking out.

1. Hemp Bedding: A Coop Essential

If there's one category of chicken supplies I think is worth putting some thought into, it's bedding.

Bedding helps absorb moisture and gives your chickens a more comfortable surface, but it also affects how much work goes into keeping the coop clean. The right choice depends on your setup, flock size, climate, and cleaning routine.

Premium Poultry offers two hemp bedding options:

The bedding is made from American-grown hemp and is designed to absorb moisture while keeping dust low.

Of course, no bedding eliminates the need to clean your coop. You'll still need to remove heavily soiled material, replenish bedding, and keep the space dry and well-ventilated.

But if you're trying to make your chicken-cleaning routine a little less of an event, hemp bedding is worth considering.

2. Nesting Pads for Cleaner Nesting Boxes

Nesting boxes are another area where a little preparation can make everyday chicken keeping easier.

You want a comfortable place for your hens to lay, and you want to be able to keep that space clean without turning egg collection into a scavenger hunt through dirty bedding.

Premium Poultry carries both hemp nesting pads and aspen nesting pads.

Hemp pads offer an absorbent, cushioned nesting surface, while aspen pads provide a more traditional natural-fiber option. Both are designed to help keep nesting boxes tidy and comfortable.

Which one makes the most sense will depend on your nesting boxes and personal preference. I would look at the size of your boxes, how your hens use them, and how often you're comfortable replacing the pads. We have tried both options, and our hens happen to prefer the Aspen Pads.

It's a small part of the coop, but nesting supplies are one of those things you don't want to realize you need when you're already in the middle of cleaning.

3. Coop Fresh for Everyday Coop Care

Let's talk about the least glamorous part of keeping chickens: the poop.

If you have chickens, you already know. If you're thinking about getting chickens, consider this your friendly warning.

Premium Poultry's Coop Fresh Coop Deodorizer is designed to help manage moisture and odors in poultry housing. It's made with mineral-based absorbents and botanical ingredients and can be applied to coop floors, nesting areas, or problem spots according to the product directions.

I look at products like this as part of a larger coop-maintenance routine, not a replacement for cleaning. Good ventilation, dry bedding, regular removal of waste, and a properly maintained coop still matter most.

But having dedicated supplies for routine upkeep is helpful, especially when you're trying to keep your backyard flock comfortable without spending every weekend doing a complete coop overhaul.

You can also explore the Coop Refresh Bundle, which brings together several coop-care essentials in one purchase.

4. Shop for More Than Just Bedding

Another reason I like having a go-to chicken supply store is that you'll need to replenish more than just bedding.

Premium Poultry also carries poultry feed, treats, nesting supplies, and other flock-care products. Its Backyard Chicken Starter Kit is worth a look if you're building your supply list, while the full shop lets you browse the available options.

I especially appreciate being able to look at larger package sizes and bundles for products I'll use regularly. Buying in larger quantities can reduce how often you need to reorder, although it's important to consider storage space, shelf life, and how quickly your own flock will use everything.

You don't need to buy every product a chicken company sells. Start with the essentials, learn your flock's needs, and add things that genuinely make sense for your setup.

My Advice for New Chicken Keepers

If you're brand-new to chickens, don't feel like you need to buy an entire store's worth of supplies before your first chick arrives.

Start with the basics: a secure coop and run, appropriate feed and fresh water, suitable bedding, nesting boxes for when your hens begin laying, and a plan for keeping everything clean and dry.

Then figure out what works for your space and routine.

We have a backyard flock, not a giant farm, and that's exactly why I pay attention to whether a product is practical for everyday use. Chicken keeping should be enjoyable, but it also comes with regular responsibilities—and the supplies you choose can make those responsibilities easier to manage.

I turn to Premium Poultry for many of our flock's essentials because I can find several of those needs in one place.

And if you're still in the “maybe we should get chickens” stage, start by figuring out whether chickens are right for your home, space, and daily routine. The supplies come next—and trust me, the chickens will provide plenty of entertainment once they arrive.
